How to Use the PAX Plus: Loading, Modes and Everyday Tips

To use a PAX Plus: make sure the oven screen is in place, pack ground dry herb into the oven and tamp it firmly, fit the standard lid (or the half-pack lid for a smaller load), press the mouthpiece briefly to switch on, and wait until the lights show the color of your mode. Long-press the mouthpiece for about two seconds to change mode, tap to cycle through Stealth, Efficiency, Flavor and Boost, and long-press or shake to confirm. Inhale slowly. This guide follows PAX's own quick-start material.

A note first: the PAX Plus is an older PAX model, and we do not currently sell the device itself. This page is for people who already own one. We do stock replacement oven screens that list the PAX Plus as compatible, and the PAX Labs hub covers the current range.

3D oven screens for PAX devices

1. What Is in the Kit

PAX's anatomy diagram for the Plus shows a flat mouthpiece and a raised mouthpiece, an oven with an oven screen, a standard lid and a half-pack lid, a chamber lid with O-ring, a multi-tool, status LEDs, and charge pins on the base for the charging dock. The device comes preassembled with a partial charge. If you prefer the raised mouthpiece, gently lift off the flat one and press the raised one into place. The multi-tool helps with lids, mouthpieces and screens that are tight, and it also tamps the herb.

2. Loading the Oven

  1. Check that the oven screen is in place. PAX's guide says to double-check this before you load, and to take the screen out only if you are using the separate insert.
  2. Grind your dry herb. PAX's quick-start card says to pack it tightly in the oven.
  3. Tamp it down firmly with the multi-tool. PAX's own tips say to tamp as firmly as possible for the best results.
  4. Fit the lid. PAX's guide says to choose the half-pack lid for less than 0.5 g of dry herb, and the standard lid for a fuller oven.

The Plus also ships with a separate insert for other material types. This guide covers dry herb only, so it is not discussed here. If your screen is bent, clogged or missing, replacements such as our 3D oven screens and flat oven filter screens list the PAX Plus as compatible. Our 3D screen vs regular screen guide explains the difference.

3. Experience Modes

The PAX Plus has four built-in Experience Modes, each with its own LED color, so you can change temperature behavior without an app:

Mode LEDs What PAX says it does
Stealth Top-left petal, purple Minimizes visible vapor and dims the LEDs and vibration for discreet sessions
Efficiency Top two petals, teal Conserves your material for a longer-lasting session
Flavor Three petals, yellow Highlights the subtler flavor, balancing flavor and vapor
Boost All four petals, red Maximum vapor production

To change mode, power the device on, long-press the mouthpiece for about two seconds and release when the LEDs change, then use short presses to cycle through the modes. To set the one you want, long-press the mouthpiece again or shake the device. PAX does not publish the temperature of each mode in its quick-start guide, so we do not list one. Flavor and Efficiency suit everyday dry herb sessions, and Boost is the high-vapor setting.

4. Heating and Drawing

  1. Press and release the mouthpiece to power on.
  2. The LEDs pulse pink while the oven heats.
  3. When the oven is ready, the LEDs turn the color of your mode, and the device vibrates lightly.
  4. Raise it to your mouth and inhale. PAX's advice is "sip, don't rip", so use slow, even, short breaths until you know how it feels.

A firmly packed oven and a clean, unblocked screen matter most for steady vapor. If vapor feels thin, see our PAX airflow guide before you change anything else.

5. Battery Lights and Charging

While the device is on, shake it to check the battery: each solid LED petal is 25% charge. A blinking red top-left LED means it is time to charge. PAX says to place it on the charger with the device contacts lined up with the charger pins, using a computer USB port (preferred) or a wall adapter that can supply 1.5 A. A full USB charge takes about 2.5 hours, and the lights show progress in 25% steps on the charger. PAX advises charging only between 0 °C and 35 °C (32 to 95 °F), and never charging or leaving a device in a vehicle. PAX also says not to leave it on the charger for more than a week at a time, to extend the battery life.

6. Cleaning and Storage

  • Wait at least 15 minutes after a session so the device is fully cool before handling it.
  • Empty the oven and use the brush from the maintenance kit to clear anything stuck inside.
  • If needed, use a cotton swab with a little isopropyl alcohol on the screen, mouthpiece and oven, and let everything dry.
  • PAX's quick-start card suggests a maintenance clean every 3 to 5 uses. Our guide to cleaning the oven and replacing the screen covers it in more detail.
  • For storage, choose a dry place at normal room temperature, away from extreme heat or cold and away from children and pets. PAX recommends keeping the battery at least half charged if you will not use it for a while.

7. If Something Seems Off

No lights on the charger. PAX's help page lists two checks for the PAX 2, 3, Mini and Plus: try a USB port on a computer or laptop, because a wall adapter may not supply enough power (PAX recommends a source that can supply 1.5 A), and push down on the device's charging contacts with your thumbs.

It will not change mode. The long press is about two seconds, and you need to release when the LEDs change before short presses will cycle the modes. Make sure the battery is charged first.

Thin vapor. This is usually a clogged screen, an overpacked or underpacked oven, or a dirty oven. Clean first and swap the screen if the mesh is blocked.

Unsure what the lights mean. Check PAX's official guide for the exact meaning of other light patterns, and do not guess. We do not list any that PAX has not published.

8. Everyday Tips

  • Start in Flavor or Efficiency mode, then move to Boost only if you want more vapor.
  • Keep a spare screen so a clogged one never stops a session.
  • If you carry it in a pocket or bag, take care that the mouthpiece is not pressed accidentally.
  • Browse the PAX accessories and replacement parts collection for screens and other parts for current models.

Final Thoughts

The PAX Plus is easy to use once you know the long-press: pack the oven, pick a mode, wait for the color and draw slowly. Keep the screen clean, charge on a suitable source and clean the oven regularly.
